NYC’s Center for Italian Modern Art to Permanently Close
The Center for Italian Modern Art (CIMA), an art museum and research center in Soho, Manhattan, will permanently close on June 22. Its current exhibition, “Nanni Balestrini: Art as Political Action – One Thousand and One Voices,” will be its last. Founded in 2013 by Italian art historian Laura Mattioli, CIMA aimed to promote Modern and contemporary Italian art. The museum hosted 13 exhibitions, showcasing major Italian artists rarely seen in North America, such as Fortunato Depero, Alberto Savinio, Giorgio Morandi, Medardo Rosso, and Marino Marini. Mattioli stated, “This was not an easy decision,” as she seeks to preserve CIMA’s archival resources for scholars and the public. The museum sponsored scholarly research, supporting fellows in producing articles, catalogues, and books to promote Italian American intellectual exchange and scholarship. Mattioli expressed gratitude for the learning and inspiration gained from these fellows and the impact of CIMA’s tours, conferences, and events.
