Rare Caspar David Friedrich Sketchbook Acquired by Berlin, Dresden, and Weimar Museums

A rare book of sketches by renowned artist Caspar David Friedrich from 1804 has been acquired by three museum authorities in Berlin, Dresden, and Weimar. Known as the Karlsruhe Sketchbook, it features drawings of the Dresden area and is one of only six surviving sketchbooks by Friedrich. The acquisition was made possible through the support of various partners and organizations, including the Ernst von Siemens Art Foundation and the Cultural Foundation of the German Federal States. The sketchbook will be displayed in exhibitions across Germany, starting at the Museum of Prints and Drawings in Berlin and then traveling to Dresden and Weimar. This acquisition coincides with the celebrations of Friedrich’s 250th birthday, with several major exhibitions dedicated to his work taking place throughout the country.
