Rare Francis Bacon Portrait to be Auctioned in New York with Estimated Value of $30m-$50m

Francis Bacon’s iconic portrait of his lover George Dyer is set to be auctioned at Sotheby’s in New York, with an estimated value of $50m. The painting, titled “Portrait of George Dyer Crouching,” was recently featured in a major exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, which has likely increased its market value.

The upcoming sale of the painting comes after a successful museum show and ahead of another major exhibition of Bacon’s work at the National Portrait Gallery in London. The portrait of Dyer is expected to attract discerning buyers who appreciate top-quality artworks.

Bacon painted a series of ten full-scale portraits of Dyer, with several pieces already in museums and one destroyed in a fire. The current owners acquired this particular painting in 1970 and it has since become highly sought-after among collectors.

The portrait’s history, connection to the artist, and rarity make it a significant market moment, despite a recent drop in the overall art market. With an estimated value of $30m to $50m and offered without a guarantee, this painting represents a major opportunity for collectors interested in Bacon’s work.
