Record-Setting Van Gogh Paris Painting with Garden Scene Estimated at $35M Up for Auction at Christie’s

Van Gogh’s painting “Corner of a Garden with Butterflies” is set to be auctioned at Christie’s, New York, with an estimated price of $28m-$35m. This masterpiece, painted in Voyer d’Argenson park in Asnières, depicts a tranquil scene with butterflies fluttering amidst pink flowers. The artwork is expected to break the record for a Van Gogh work from his Paris period.

The painting features five white butterflies and one red one, adding movement and vibrancy to the composition. Van Gogh’s fascination with butterflies is evident in his later works, including “Butterflies and Poppies” and “Long Grass with Butterflies” painted during his time at the asylum in Saint-Rémy.

The symbolism of butterflies, representing the transient nature of life, resonates with Van Gogh’s own short-lived artistic career. Despite his untimely death in 1890, his legacy lives on through his iconic paintings, capturing the beauty and fleeting moments of nature.
