Revisiting the Work of Forgotten Photojournalist Bert Hardy in New London Exhibition

Bert Hardy, a UK photojournalist, captured iconic images of mid-20th century Britain. An exhibition titled “Bert Hardy: Photojournalism in War and Peace” at the Photographers’ Gallery showcases his diverse work, including social documentary, war photography, sports, advertising, and street photography. Curated by Tom Allbeson, the exhibition features prints, archival materials, and little-known color works, highlighting Hardy’s skill and versatility. Despite his impact on mid-century photojournalism, Hardy remains relatively unknown compared to his British contemporaries. The exhibition aims to elevate Hardy’s legacy and celebrate classic black-and-white photo-reportage in Britain. Visit the Photographers’ Gallery in London from 23 February to 2 June to explore Bert Hardy’s remarkable body of work.
