Rubens’ Remastered Painting for Sale at Sotheby’s
Peter Paul Rubens reworked a 16th-century landscape painting by Herri Met de Bles, titled “The Holy Family with the Infant Saint John the Baptist in an Extensive Landscape with Travellers”, which will be auctioned at Sotheby’s London in July. The painting, jointly attributed to Rubens and De Bles, underwent changes including adjustments to the positions of the figures and the drapery. The use of infrared photography and X-rays revealed Rubens’ contributions to the artwork. This rare joint attribution has been supported by evidence showing Rubens’ artistic transformation of the original piece. Rubens’ interest in the art of the past and his ability to integrate earlier influences into his own style are highlighted in this reworked masterpiece.
