Russia Allows Bolivia to Use Venice Biennale Pavilion

The Plurinational State of Bolivia will be taking over Russia’s pavilion at the Venice Biennale for the 60th edition of the event, following Russia’s absence due to the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The exhibition, titled “looking to the futurepast, we are treading forward,” will feature artists from Bolivia and other South American countries. Bolivia signed a lithium agreement with Russia in 2023, and a research reactor will be launched with Russian specialists in 2025. The decision to hand over the pavilion coincides with cultural cooperation between Russia and Bolivia. Russia has been expanding its cultural reach, reviving old Soviet ties in various regions. The Russian pavilion at the Biennale faced controversy after the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The V-A-C Foundation, the only other Russian institutional presence in Venice, also vacated its space.
