Six Art Galleries Transforming a School in Upstate New York into a Collective Art Space

A collective of six galleries in Manhattan has purchased an abandoned school building and 22 acres of outdoor space in Hudson, New York, for hosting group exhibitions under the name The Campus. This new joint venture signifies a shift towards collaboration in the art world. The galleries include Bortolami, James Cohan, Kaufmann Repetto, Anton Kern, Andrew Kreps, and Kurimanzutto. The space will allow for more storage of artists’ works and will feature an inaugural exhibition with pieces by 80 artists, including Nairy Baghramian, Spencer Finch, Jenny Holzer, Roy Lichtenstein, Lee Mullican, and Yinka Shonibare. The galleries plan to maintain the historical atmosphere of the school, leaving some areas untouched for curators and artists to respond to creatively. The move to Hudson reflects the town’s increasing popularity as a destination for contemporary art and vacation homes, driving up rents and displacing longtime residents. With fewer children in the area, schools have closed down, leaving behind vacant buildings that are being repurposed by art galleries.
