2024 marks a significant year for American society as the Boca Raton Museum of Art celebrates its 75th anniversary with a special presentation by artist Mateo Blanco. Blanco is known for his unique interpretations of the American flag using unconventional materials. To commemorate Labor Day, Blanco will present his latest artwork, “Credit Flag,” at the museum.
Blanco will also host an in-gallery workshop called Creation Station on August 31, 2024, where visitors can create their own personalized American flag art. “Credit Flag” is made up of 42 credit cards Blanco has used over 25 years, adding depth to the piece’s political, economic, and social commentary.
The museum already houses two other works by Blanco, “July 4, 2020,” and “Native Flag,” which showcase his personal connection to his Colombian roots through the use of different materials and textiles. Executive Director Irvin Lippman praised Blanco’s ability to create works that resonate with personal meaning and cultural significance.
Blanco, born in Miami in 1981, began his artistic journey in Colombia before studying fine art and jewelry in Florida. He is also an accomplished opera performer who sang for President George H.W. Bush in 2003. Blanco’s dream of exhibiting at the Boca Raton Museum of Art has now become a reality, showcasing his artistic talents and personal growth.
The Boca Raton Museum of Art, originally founded by artists in 1950, has grown into a vital cultural resource with a diverse collection of art and sculptures. The museum’s mission is to be a hub of creativity and cultural exchange, drawing visitors from across the country to experience its exhibitions and programs.
Mateo Blanco’s art is a testament to his personal journey and cultural heritage, reflected in his unique interpretations of the American flag. His work invites viewers to explore the intersections of art, identity, and history, making a meaningful impact on the art world.
