The Met’s Recovery Post-Pandemic

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City has experienced a significant increase in local visitors, surpassing pre-pandemic numbers. International visitors, however, have only reached about half of their pre-2020 levels due to the impact of the pandemic on tourism. The museum attracted 5.5 million visitors in the 2023-24 fiscal year, showing a positive trend for the cultural sector. The institution has focused on reaching underserved audiences, with record numbers of people of color making up nearly 56% of its domestic visitors.

A major upcoming exhibition titled “Flight into Egypt: Black Artists and Ancient Egypt, 1876-Now” will showcase how Egyptian iconography has influenced Black artistry, featuring works from artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Rashid Johnson. The museum also announced a five-year partnership with Genesis Art, the creative arm of a South Korean luxury automotive brand, to sponsor an annual contemporary art commission for its facade. This partnership will kick off with South Korean sculptor Lee Bul as the first artist showcased.
