The World’s Most Expensive Dinosaur: $44.6 Million Stegosaurus ‘Apex’ Fossil
The stegosaurus known as “Apex” recently broke records by selling for $44.6 million at a Sotheby’s auction in New York. This sale marked the highest price ever paid for a fossil, exceeding its pre-sale estimate by over 11 times. The auction saw seven bidders competing for the specimen, with an anonymous buyer ultimately purchasing it. The buyer intends to loan the fossil to a U.S. institution, stating that “Apex was born in America and is going to stay in America.”
Discovered in 2022 in Dinosaur, Colorado, by commercial paleontologist Jason Cooper, “Apex” is a large stegosaurus measuring 11 feet tall and 27 feet long. The specimen is notable for its completeness, with 254 out of approximately 319 fossil bone elements intact. The fossil shows evidence of arthritis, indicating an advanced age, and showcases detailed preservation, including skin impressions and throat armor.
The sale of “Apex” was part of Sotheby’s Natural History Auction, which also featured fossils, meteorites, minerals, and paleolithic tools. The event achieved a total of $45.8 million, setting a new record for a Natural History auction. This sale follows previous significant dinosaur sales at Sotheby’s, surpassing records set by “Sue” the T. rex and “Stan.”
