UK Covid-19 Lockdown Commemorated in Artist’s Film on Fourth Anniversary
A film documenting the impact and aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic in the UK will be shown at Flowers Gallery in London and Pallant House Gallery in Chichester. The 33-minute work by artist Simon Roberts, titled “An Avoidable Loss, A Failure of State,” marks the fourth anniversary of the first official Covid-19 lockdown in the UK. The film explores themes of grief and questions surrounding the government’s response to the crisis. It features the voices of politicians such as Boris Johnson and Matt Hancock, accompanied by mortality figures and names of those who died. Roberts hopes the film will be seen as a political work, highlighting the government’s actions during the pandemic. The film was inspired by Roberts’ series of photographs called “A Daily Sea,” which captured sea views during the first UK lockdown. An edition of the photographs was acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
