Van Gogh’s famous “Self-portrait” from autumn 1887 is set to make its debut at the National Museum Cardiff, marking the first time that any of his self-portraits will be displayed in Wales. The painting will be part of the museum’s “Art of the Selfie” exhibition until January 26, 2025. In return, Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s “La Parisienne” will be loaned to the Musée d’Orsay for their exhibition “Paris 1874: Inventing Impressionism.”
Interestingly, Van Gogh’s “Self-portrait” almost found its way to a UK collection a century ago when it was offered to London’s National Gallery for £1,000. However, it ended up being sold to a French collector and eventually made its way to the Musée d’Orsay. The painting features a striking use of colors and distinctive brushstroke lines, showcasing Van Gogh’s unique style.
In other Van Gogh news, David Zwirner Books will be publishing the first English translation of Emile Bernard’s writings on Van Gogh in a book titled “My Friend Van Gogh.” Originally published in 1911, the book includes letters exchanged between Bernard and Van Gogh, offering valuable insights into their relationship.
