Alexandra Pirici’s Science Experiment Exhibition in Berlin
Alexandra Pirici’s latest large-scale live work, “Attune,” is currently on display at Berlin’s Hamburger Bahnhof. The exhibition, commissioned by Audemars Piguet Contemporary and funded by the German Federal Cultural Foundation, combines elements of science, landscape, and choral performance. Pirici, known for her “live sculptures,” explores themes of coexistence between humans and other lifeforms in the immersive exhibition.
“Attune” features human performers interacting with inanimate elements such as sand dunes and chemical gardens created by dropping metal crystals into a solution. The exhibition draws inspiration from biochemistry, molecular biology, and physics, as well as literary works like Ursula K. Le Guin’s “Always Coming Home.”
Visitors to the exhibition are invited to explore a fictional planet-like landscape and witness live performances inspired by the natural world, including the synchronized movements of fireflies and the spiraling leaves of plants. The title “Attune” reflects the musical connotation of the exhibition, with polyphonic songs composed by Pirici enhancing the immersive experience.
With an underlying ecological message of interconnectedness, Pirici hopes to inspire viewers to appreciate the material world and humanity’s place within it. While “Attune” is a temporary installation, Pirici’s dream is to create a permanent public art space where performance, philosophy, science, and nature converge.
“Alexandra Pirici: Attune” is on display at Hamburger Bahnhof until October 6, 2024, with live action performances daily. The exhibition encourages visitors to find harmony amidst division and reflects on humanity’s interconnectedness with the world around us.
