Ancient and Contemporary Japanese Kites Take Flight in Italy for ‘One Sky One World’ Peace Festival – World Art News

The ARTEVENTO Festival, known as the world’s longest-running kite festival, is set to take place in Cervia, Italy, from October 11 to 22, 2024. This year’s event, titled “One Sky One World – Festival of Kites for Peace,” will feature a special exhibition called “Around the World in 80 Kites – Japan Special.” This exhibition will showcase both ancient and contemporary Japanese kites and highlight Japan’s rich kite-making heritage.

The festival’s centerpiece will be an exhibition dedicated to Japanese kites at the Magazzino del Sale Torre, sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Culture, the Japanese Institute of Culture in Italy, and the AIMSC. This exhibition will celebrate kites as an “intangible heritage of humanity” and will explore Japan’s centuries-old kite-making traditions, materials, and philosophy.

A cultural partnership between ARTEVENTO’s Kite Museum and the Tako no Hakubutsukan Museum in Tokyo has led to the acquisition of a unique collection of traditional Nagoya kites, gifted by Japanese kite master Masaaki Sato. The festival will also feature works donated by Masaaki Modegi, President of the Japan Kite Association, and Director of the Tokyo Kite Museum.

The exhibition will not only showcase the artistry of Japanese kites but also emphasize environmental sustainability. The festival will include a Parade for Peace on October 13, promoting kites as symbols of peace, freedom, and environmental stewardship.

The ARTEVENTO Festival aims to provide a diverse and immersive experience for all ages, blending artistry, heritage, and a message of global unity. More information about workshops, guided tours, and the festival’s schedule can be found on the festival’s website at www.artevento.com.
