Anti-Censorship Group Criticizes Cancelling Kehinde Wiley Exhibitions as a Disservice to Audiences
An anti-censorship organization is criticizing the Pérez Art Museum Miami (Pamm), the Minneapolis Museum of Art (Mia), and the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, Nebraska, for canceling or postponing upcoming solo shows by Kehinde Wiley, following allegations of sexual assault. Wiley has denied the accusations, but the museums’ decisions have sparked backlash. The National Coalition Against Censorship (NCAC) has sent a letter to these institutions, urging them not to abandon Wiley’s exhibitions. The NCAC argues that museums should focus on the artistic merit of works and not be enforcers of moral standards. Similar controversies have arisen in the past involving artists like Chuck Close and Dana Schutz.
