Controversial Depiction of Rape in Gentileschi Show Sparks Student Protests

The recent exhibition depicting the rape of Artemisia Gentileschi by Agostino Tasso has sparked controversy in Italy. Titled “Artemisia Gentileschi: Courage and Passion,” the exhibition at Genoa’s Palazzo Ducale showcases the artist’s work, including a multimedia installation depicting the assault in 1611. Despite criticism from female students, the organisers defend it as a denunciation of violence. The Foundation of the Palazzo Ducale stands by the exhibition’s message against violence towards women. The curator, Costantino D’Orazio, acknowledges the need for museums to handle sensitive themes better.
