Curator Files Lawsuit Against Robilant + Voena Gallery for Workplace Violations

Art Market Update: Lawsuit Alleges Toxin Workplace Environment at Old Masters Gallery Robilant + Voena

A recent lawsuit filed in New York against Edmondo di Robilant and Marco Voena of the high-end Old Master dealership Robilant + Voena has brought to light allegations of a toxic workplace environment. The lawsuit, brought by curator Virginia Brilliant, accuses the gallery owners of creating an atmosphere rife with antisemitism, sexism, sexual harassment, homophobia, and body shaming.

Brilliant, who worked as an independent consultant for the gallery, claims that she was subjected to derogatory and discriminatory behavior, including being called offensive names, harassed based on her gender and appearance, and pressured to engage in inappropriate activities to secure business deals. The complaint also accuses the gallery owners of failing to compensate Brilliant for her work and reneging on promises to cover her medical expenses for breast cancer treatment.

These allegations paint a disturbing picture of the art world, challenging the perception of Old Masters dealers as refined and upstanding. The lawsuit seeks damages and reimbursement for Brilliant’s legal fees, highlighting the need for accountability in the art market. Robilant + Voena have until July to respond to the lawsuit in court.
