Elias Sime Reveals the Stunning Reality of Mineral Extraction in New Venice Exhibition

Ethiopian artist Elias Sime’s exhibition "Dichotomy ፊት አና ጀርባ" opens this week at Tanarte in Castello, Venice. Sime, known for his sculptural paintings or collages made from materials like e-waste gathered from the Mercato in Addis Ababa, presents seven pieces in this show. The works explore themes of our changing modes of connection and our relationship to nature.

The exhibition is an official collateral event of the Venice Biennale, where Sime previously participated in the international exhibition "The Milk of Dreams." The current show features pieces meticulously crafted from hand-woven coated wires or sliced computer motherboards. These artworks, resembling landscapes from afar, tell the story of mineral extraction, highlighting the environmental impact of raw material stripping.

Sime aims to raise questions about balancing the earth’s sustainability with technological consumption through his art. Collaborating with Meskerem Assegued, Sime creates thought-provoking pieces that address global issues. His meticulous artistic approach reflects in his public projects, such as the Zoma Museum in Addis Ababa, showcasing traditional craftsmanship and environmental consciousness.

With a touring retrospective and upcoming architectural projects, Sime’s artistry extends beyond exhibitions. His Venice series reflects his fascination with the city’s engineering feats, offering a global narrative on pressing issues. Through his art, Sime invites viewers to engage with the complexities of our collective future.
