Exploring Artistic Boundaries: Border Biennial Showcases Texas-Mexico Border Art

The Border Biennial, also known as Bienal Fronteriza, is making a comeback after the Covid-19 pandemic hiatus. The event celebrates art and culture along the US-Mexico border. Hosted by the El Paso Museum of Art and the Museo de Arte de Ciudad Juárez, the two museums are located just minutes apart. The biennial, curated by Claudia Preza, Edgar Picazo Merino, and Jazmin Ontiveros Harvey, aims to bridge the divide between the two cities.
Highlighting the unique culture and thriving arts scene of the border region, the exhibition features over 100 works by 50 artists from both sides of the border. The selected artists explore themes such as familial relationships, identity, gender, environmental justice, and migration patterns.
The exhibition will kick off at the El Paso museum in December, followed by a showcase at the Juárez museum in January. Through the Frontera Forward program, the EPMA aims to promote border communities year-round. This initiative includes commissions for local artists to create public art installations in both cities.
The Border Biennial showcases the rich cultural tapestry of the border region, offering a platform for artists to share their stories and experiences. The event serves as a testament to the vibrant artistic community and international exchange that defines the border region.
