Four Joan Mitchell Paintings Expected to Fetch Over $50 Million in New York’s Spring Auctions
Four paintings by the pioneering Abstract Expressionist Joan Mitchell (1925-92) are set to be auctioned at Sotheby’s in New York next month, with an estimated collective value between $36m and $51.5m. The artworks come from a private collection and include pieces such as “Untitled” from around 1955 and “Noon” from around 1969. Mitchell’s exploration of natural forms and mastery in abstract representation are highlighted in these works, showcasing her unique visual style.
The upcoming auction of Mitchell’s paintings coincides with a growing interest in her work across museums and the art market. A recent retrospective at SFMOMA and the Baltimore Museum of Art, as well as a show at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, have contributed to this renewed attention. Additionally, a television adaptation of Mary Gabriel’s book “Ninth Street Women” featuring Mitchell is in the works for Amazon.
In addition to Mitchell’s paintings, the spring auction season in New York will feature works by other prominent artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat, Francis Bacon, Lucio Fontana, and Claude Monet. These artworks are expected to attract significant attention and high bids, further establishing the vibrant art market landscape.
