French authorities seize suspected stolen Russian avant-garde paintings
French court bailiffs seized over 100 works attributed to Russian avant-garde artists in Paris suspecting they were stolen from a private collector. The seized works, estimated to be worth over €100m, include paintings by famous artists such as Wassily Kandinsky and Kazimir Malevich. The collector, Uthman Khatib, asserts that the paintings were stolen from a storage facility in Germany in 2019 and has been working to recover a total of around 900 works belonging to his family. The recovery efforts have been supported by LitFin, a litigation financier, with some of the stolen art reportedly sold at auctions in various countries. The market for Russian avant-garde art has faced challenges due to the prevalence of fakes, with previous legal disputes surrounding the authenticity of works owned by Khatib. The recent seizure in Paris marks a significant development in the ongoing legal battle to reclaim the stolen art.
