Jordaens Painting to be Sold Following Settlement with Heirs of Jewish Bank Shareholders

An oil portrait by Jacques Jordaens depicting a young woman is set to be auctioned in London today. The painting, titled “Head Study of a Young Woman,” carries an estimated value of £150,000 to £200,000. The artwork is part of a larger collection of pieces previously held by Lisser & Rosenkranz Bank’s shareholders and is the first work for which they have obtained compensation. The bank, owned by Jewish shareholders, was forced into liquidation before the Nazi invasion of the Netherlands, leading to the sale of the collection. The painting was part of a group of works consigned to art dealer Jacques Goudstikker, who later fled and died during his escape. The painting may have been sold to Hermann Göring and potentially gifted to Hitler. The heirs of the bank’s shareholders have filed a claim for the return of several paintings and drawings, with some works currently held in museums in the US and Russia. Despite efforts for restitution, a previous claim for Rubens paintings was rejected.
