Last-minute bankruptcy filing halts auction of 1,400 African art pieces

A planned sale of a mysterious collection of around 1,400 African art pieces in Houston was called off after the owner filed for bankruptcy. The owner, Sam Njunuri, needed to pay $989,000 in damages to former tenants who sued him. The collection was abruptly canceled, disappointing potential bidders. The artefacts had come under public scrutiny in 2020 and led to a corruption investigation of Harris County Precinct 1 commissioner Rodney Ellis. Ellis declined to comment on the collection’s fate. Njunuri, a real estate agent, had intended to create a museum for the art but lacks ownership or provenance materials. Despite the bankruptcy filing, Njunuri hopes the art can be shown in a museum.
