Monet Painting Owned by Nelson-Atkins Museum & Donor’s Descendants to be Sold at Auction

Claude Monet’s iconic painting “Moulin de Limetz” is set to be auctioned at Christie’s 20th century evening sale in New York, with an estimated price range of $18m to $25m. The artwork, featuring a sun-dappled riverscape, is a masterpiece that captures the beauty of the River Epte in France. Originally acquired by the Atha family in Kansas City, the painting has been a cherished part of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art’s collection for many years.

After a unique arrangement allowed the museum and the family to share ownership of the painting, the Atha family has decided to sell their share at auction. The proceeds from the sale will go towards creating an endowment in honor of Joseph S. and Ethel B. Atha, allowing the museum to continue acquiring art in their names.

This particular version of “Moulin de Limetz” is one of two completed by Monet in 1888, with the other painting fetching over $25m at a previous auction. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, known for its exceptional collection, already boasts four other paintings by Monet. As the art world celebrates the 150th anniversary of the first Impressionist exhibition, the sale of “Moulin de Limetz” presents a unique opportunity for art enthusiasts to own a piece of history.
