New Podcast Hosted by Venus Williams at Carnegie Museum of Art
The Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh is presenting a new exhibition titled “Widening the Lens: Photography, Ecology and the Contemporary Landscape” from 11 May to 12 January 2025. This exhibition features nearly 100 works by 19 artists that explore environmental photography in diverse and progressive ways. The show challenges traditional photography concepts and examines the relationship between artists and nature. The exhibition will be accompanied by a six-episode podcast hosted by Venus Williams, performances, readings, and educational events.
“Widening the Lens” is organized around four themes that address colonial legacies, nature as a memorial landscape, human impact on the environment, and ecological anxiety and anticipation. Participating artists include A.K. Burns, Dionne Lee, Xaviera Simmons, Sky Hopinka, Sam Contis, Justine Kurland, Chanell Stone, and Tomás Saraceno. The exhibition aims to question inherited narratives about people and ecology through the camera.
The podcast will feature guest scholars, writers, and artists, with Venus Williams hosting to highlight artists of color and attract a more diverse audience to the museum. Williams sees the exhibition as a significant project that combines art, environment, and storytelling. She aims to amplify the voices of the participating artists and prompt new ways of engaging with landscapes through photography.
