Phillips New York Evening Auction Rakes in $72.3m with Two New Basquiat Paintings



Phillips achieved sales of $72.3m ($86.2m with fees) during their recent evening sale of Modern and contemporary art in New York. Although falling slightly short of the estimated range, the auction featured notable highlights such as Barkley L. Hendricks’ “Vendetta” selling for $2.6m. The most valuable lots included two paintings by Jean-Michel Basquiat, with “Untitled (ELMAR)” fetching $40.2m. Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa set a record with a Basquiat painting selling for $85m. The sale also saw strong results for works by younger artists, reflecting a stable and sustainable market. Overall, Phillips remains optimistic about the outcome, with fresh and rare offerings contributing to the success of the auction.
