Rare Leonora Carrington Painting Set to Break Surrealist Auction Record

Sotheby’s is set to break Leonora Carrington’s auction record with the offering of her masterpiece painting, “Les Distractions de Dagobert”. The painting is expected to fetch between $12m to $18m at Sotheby’s evening sale of Modern art on 15 May in New York. This surge in interest in female Surrealists marks a significant cultural shift, with Carrington’s work at the forefront. “Les Distractions de Dagobert” draws inspiration from various influences and will be offered for sale for the first time in nearly three decades. Sotheby’s has seen success in recent years with works by women Surrealists, setting new records for artists like Remedios Varo and Leonor Fini. Carrington’s painting is the only major lot by a woman in the upcoming spring sales in New York, alongside works by Jean-Michel Basquiat and other prominent artists. Christie’s and Sotheby’s will also feature noteworthy pieces by Monet, Lucio Fontana, and Francis Bacon in their evening sales.
