Restored Holbein Painting of Tudor Merchant with Enhanced Features

New research and conservation work on the 1533 portrait of Young Derich Born by Hans Holbein the Younger has revealed that the painter made repeated small changes, giving Born even more chiselled features. The painting, newly conserved after work at the Paul Getty museum in California, will be showcased in an exhibition at the Queen’s Gallery in Buckingham Palace tracing Holbein’s work in England and his rise to become the favorite artist of the Tudor court. The portrait of Born, a German merchant in London expelled in 1541, underwent thorough conservation work, revealing original details and textures. The exhibition will also feature 40 of Holbein’s drawings from the Royal Collection. This rare opportunity to see Holbein’s intricate work will take place from 10 November to 14 April 2024 in London.
