Sotheby’s New York Spring Auctions Kick Off with $227.9m Double-Header
New York’s spring auction season is underway, with Sotheby’s facing challenges as it strives to meet its targets. The recent evening sales fell short of expectations, but still outperformed last year’s results. The Now sale at Sotheby’s saw mixed results, with some lots exceeding estimates and others falling short. The top seller, Kerry James Marshall’s “Vignette #6,” fetched $6.5m. The contemporary art portion of the auction also had its ups and downs, with some lots surpassing expectations and others failing to sell. Notable sales included Francis Bacon’s “Portrait of George Dyer Crouching” and Lucio Fontana’s “Concetto spaziale, La fine di Dio.” Faith Ringgold’s “Dinner at Gertrude Stein’s” set a new auction record. Despite some setbacks, the auction market continues to push forward, with Christie’s and Phillips set to begin their sales in the coming days.
