Top April Art Sales to Watch in the Art Market



Bahman Mohasses, Untitled (Fifi) (1964)

Bahman Mohasses, known as the “Persian Picasso”, created this masterpiece during a prolific phase of his artistic career. The painting features a faceless female character named Fifi, who appears in several of his works over the years. This particular piece is part of the Modern and Contemporary Middle East auction at Sotheby’s in London on 25th April, with an estimated value of £150,000-£200,000.

Gustav Klimt, Portrait of Fräulein Lieser (1917)

A rare late portrait by Gustav Klimt, the renowned artist, is set to be auctioned at Im Kinsky in Vienna on 24th April with an estimated value of €30m-€50m. The painting, which was long lost and recently rediscovered in private ownership, is believed to have been commissioned by the Lieser family, prominent Jewish industrialists in the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Hughie Lee-Smith, Ball Player (1970)

An intriguing oil painting by the US artist Hughie Lee-Smith, depicting a solitary ball player against a weathered wall, will be up for auction at Swann Auctions in New York on 4th April. The artwork is estimated to fetch between $150,000-$200,000 and showcases Lee-Smith’s distinctive style of stark urban scenes.

Thomas Hart Benton, White Horse (1955)

A captivating equine scene by Thomas Hart Benton, capturing the essence of the American Great Plains, will headline Christie’s Modern American Art sale in New York on 18th April. The painting, set in Utah, is expected to fetch between $1.5m-$2m and has been part of the collection of Lois and Philip Macht since 1965. Their collection, featuring works by various artists, will also be showcased in upcoming Christie’s sales.
