Efforts to Preserve Museum of London Building Launched Amidst Threat of Demolition
Campaigners are fighting to prevent the demolition of the Museum of London’s former home, despite plans being approved to build a new office complex in its place. The Museum of London and Bastion House, both 1970s buildings by Powell & Moya, are facing demolition. The process was delayed by Michael Gove before planning permission was granted. Campaigners are hopeful that the buildings can still be saved, as it may be years before construction begins. The opposition is urging the City of London Corporation to follow their retrofitting policy and consider the environmental impact of demolition. Policy Exchange, a Conservative think tank founded by Michael Gove, recently published a report supporting the opposition to high-rise buildings on the London Wall site. One proposed solution is to repurpose the site for educational or cultural use. Universities and arts organizations may be interested in using the space for teaching or cultural activities.
