Ellsworth Kelly Retrospective in Paris Showcases Artist’s Mastery of Shape, Color, and Feeling

The Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris is currently hosting an exhibition of works by Ellsworth Kelly, a renowned American artist known for his use of solid color, form, and line. The exhibition, titled “Shapes and Colours, 1949-2015,” features over 100 pieces of Kelly’s art and includes his last site-specific commission completed before his passing in 2015.

The exhibition showcases Kelly’s evolution as an artist, from his time in Paris where he was influenced by artists like Hans Arp and John Cage, to his return to the US where he found his own unique style separate from existing art movements. Kelly’s work focuses on the physical effect of color, space, and the intersection of painting and sculpture.

Some highlights of the exhibition include his Abstract Expressionist painting inspired by Monet, his Yellow Curve floor sculpture that floods a room with yellow light, and a painting made of separated dancing grey shapes that interact with the surrounding space. Kelly’s work is characterized by its reductive yet playful nature, emphasizing the viewer’s experience and interpretation.

The exhibition at the Louis Vuitton Foundation offers a comprehensive look at Kelly’s career and artistic development, inviting visitors to engage with the art on a sensory level. It is a must-see for art enthusiasts looking to immerse themselves in Kelly’s unique artistic vision.

Ellsworth Kelly’s exhibition, “Shapes and Colours, 1949-2015,” will be on display at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris until September 9th.
