Getty Museum Adds Neo-Classical Painter Sophie Frémiet’s Portrait to Collection
The J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles recently acquired Sophie Frémiet’s 19th-century painting “Portrait of a Woman,” marking the artist’s first work to join a US museum collection. The Neo-Classical artwork shows a young woman in a blue dress and orange shawl, seated at a table with her feathered hat and opera glasses. Frémiet’s talent was praised by her teacher Jacques-Louis David, who asked her to paint a copy of his own work. The painting is now on display at the Getty Center alongside other pieces from the museum’s Neo-Classical collection.
