Guggenheim Workers’ Union Protests During Contract Negotiations

Unionised art handlers and facility workers at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York have staged protests over the last few weeks to bring attention to their ongoing contract negotiations. The union, part of the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 30, has been bargaining for its second contract since January. Museum workers are advocating for fair wages, increased benefits, and more transparency in hiring processes. The Guggenheim’s staff, including curators and educators, have also formed a union and successfully negotiated their first contract in 2021. The same union represents workers at various museums and cultural institutions across the Northeastern United States.
