Harvard University Stands Firm on Arthur M. Sackler Museum Name
Harvard University has chosen not to rename the Arthur M. Sackler Museum, despite calls from students to sever ties with the family linked to the opioid epidemic. The decision was based on a committee’s report, which Harvard Corporation ultimately followed. While Arthur Sackler has not been directly implicated in the crisis, some argue his marketing techniques contributed to OxyContin’s success. The Sackler family settled lawsuits related to Purdue Pharma’s aggressive marketing of OxyContin. Activists, including Nan Goldin, have protested the family’s immunity from prosecution. Some institutions, like Tufts University and the Met Museum, have removed the Sackler name from their spaces. Goldin and Pain have staged protests at Harvard Art Museums, advocating for accountability in the opioid crisis.
