LACMA Accused of displaying counterfeit Korean art
The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) is facing criticism for displaying works of art deemed as fakes by a group of Korean art experts. The late Korean artists Lee Jung-seop and Park Soo-keun’s pieces were featured in the exhibition “Korean Treasures From the Chester and Cameron Chang Collection” and were identified as counterfeits during an official appraisal at LACMA. Experts expressed concerns about rushed provenance and a lack of understanding of Korean art. The exhibition showcased 35 works donated to LACMA by collectors Chester Chang and Cameron. The authenticity of the pieces first came into question publicly in a report by The JoongAng Ilbo. LACMA responded to the allegations, stating their confidence in the research findings and commitment to further studying the works in the collection. They promised to provide more context and art-historical significance in future publications.
