Stonehenge tunnel scheme scrapped: Celebrations from campaigners
The UK government has cancelled a controversial £2bn redevelopment scheme at Stonehenge, which would have involved building a two-mile tunnel near the ancient site. The decision, made by chancellor of the exchequer Rachel Reeves, comes as part of a budget overhaul to address a £22bn fiscal shortfall. The project, overseen by National Highways, aimed to reroute the A303 road through a dual-carriageway tunnel near Stonehenge. Opponents of the scheme have welcomed the cancellation, while English Heritage and National Trust have expressed disappointment. The decision follows a series of legal battles and appeals, with a final judgement still pending. Earlier this month, Unesco rejected a proposal to place Stonehenge on its “World Heritage in Danger” list.
