MFA Boston Director Matthew Teitelbaum Announces Retirement After Ten-Year Term
Matthew Teitelbaum, director and chief executive of the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) Boston, will retire in August 2025 after a decade of transformative leadership. During his tenure, Teitelbaum oversaw significant initiatives, including the launch of the MFA 2020 strategic plan and the establishment of the MFA Pathways internship program. Under his guidance, the museum underwent physical renovations and expansions, adding new galleries and acquiring significant collections.
Teitelbaum faced challenges as well, including pandemic closures, union negotiations, and a racial incident involving visiting students. Through it all, he remained committed to promoting diversity, inclusion, and the power of art to change perceptions. His legacy at the MFA includes major exhibitions, such as the controversial Philip Guston retrospective, as well as a renewed focus on the museum’s role in the 21st century.
