Rare Titian masterpiece ‘The Rest on the Flight into Egypt’ up for auction at Christie’s.
The Longleat Titian, also known as “The Rest on the Flight into Egypt,” by the Venetian master Titian, is set to be auctioned at Christie’s. This exquisite early painting was stolen 29 years ago and later recovered at a London bus stop. The heist story adds to its allure, with a narrative that includes professional thieves using a ladder to break into Longleat House and escape with the painting. After being recovered, it was returned to Longleat and is now being sold with an estimated value of £15m-£25m.
The painting has a rich history, having been part of prestigious collections over the years. It was once owned by a Venetian spice merchant before passing through the hands of notable figures like James, 3rd Marquess of Hamilton, and the Habsburg Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria. Eventually, it found its way to Longleat, where it remained until the theft in 1995.
Painted on canvas affixed to panel, “The Rest” features a Madonna and Child in a pastoral landscape. The composition reflects influences from Bellini and Giorgione, with a distinctively Titianesque interpretation.
