Orsanmichele in Florence Breaks Visitor Records After Reopening

The Orsanmichele in Florence, a church and former granary housing significant Renaissance sculptures, recently underwent a €1.1 million refurbishment. Since reopening, it has seen a substantial increase in visitor numbers, with 8,000 visitors in the first 21 days post-reopening, compared to 13,000 in the entire previous year. Located centrally in Florence, this landmark has a rich history dating back to the 14th century when guilds commissioned sculptures for its facade. The recent renovation aimed to enhance the viewing experience of these sculptures, which are now displayed on raised plinths with improved lighting. The refurbishment also included the restoration of the church’s vast tabernacle, showcasing a secret staircase and Bernardo Daddi’s painting. With extended opening hours, the Orsanmichele now welcomes visitors six days a week, positioning it as a must-visit attraction in Florence.
