Portland Museum of Art Announces Layoffs During Expansion Project

The Portland Museum of Art (PMA) in Maine recently announced layoffs affecting 13 employees due to financial challenges caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. The museum’s director, Mark Bessire, has taken a voluntary salary reduction as part of cost-cutting measures. Those laid off include managers, salaried employees, and hourly workers. None of the affected employees are members of the recently formed union of gallery attendants and security staff. Despite the layoffs, the museum is moving forward with an ambitious $100m renovation and expansion project, which aims to add 60,000 sq. ft to the existing campus. This project, designed by Lever Architecture, will continue as planned to accommodate the museum’s growing collection and to better serve its diverse communities. The layoffs and restructuring are part of the museum’s efforts to secure its financial future and ensure long-term stability and growth.
