Québec City Museum’s Jean Paul Riopelle Pavilion Sees Significant Increase in Costs

The Musée National des Beaux-Arts du Québec (MNBAQ) in Québec City is beginning construction on a new addition honoring Modern artist Jean Paul Riopelle. The budget for the Espace Riopelle project has nearly doubled since its announcement, now totaling C$84m. The provincial government, Jean-Paul Riopelle Foundation, municipal government, and MNBAQ Foundation have all increased their contributions. The museum plans to launch a fundraising campaign in the fall and expects the new pavilion to be inaugurated in 2026. The design features rising geometric volumes with glass walls, inspired by Riopelle’s studio, and will showcase Riopelle’s masterpiece, Hommage à Rosa Luxembourg. This project was announced in celebration of the centenary of Riopelle’s birth in 1923.
