State lawmakers cut funding for New Jersey’s Centre Pompidou outpost
New Jersey officials have announced the withdrawal of funding for the Centre Pompidou x Jersey City project, a satellite location of the famous Modern and contemporary art museum in Paris. The decision was based on the ongoing impacts of Covid-19, global conflicts affecting the supply chain, rising costs, and a $19m operating deficit. The allocated funds have been redirected to the state’s general fund, sparking allegations of political retaliation from Jersey City mayor Steven Fulop. The project, initially planned as a multidisciplinary art laboratory in Jersey City, faced criticism from New Jersey Republicans. Centre Pompidou also has locations in Brussels, Metz, Shanghai, and Malaga, with upcoming projects in Saudi Arabia and South Korea. The Paris museum is set to undergo a five-year renovation, drawing mixed reactions from the city’s art community.
