Barbican Show Faces Controversy Over Gaza ‘Censorship’ Row

Following the withdrawal of loans to a Barbican Centre exhibition over “censorship” allegations, two artists are now removing their works from the show. French Moroccan artist Yto Barrada and Filipino artist Cian Dayrit have requested that their works be taken down from the exhibition. The Barbican Art Gallery had decided not to host a talk discussing Gaza and the Holocaust, leading to this backlash. The collectors who had loaned works to the exhibition accused the centre of censorship and repression. The Barbican has agreed to remove the works of Barrada and Dayrit from the show. The centre confirms that there are no plans to close the exhibition early due to the removals. Chief executive Claire Spencer has expressed regret over the handling of the situation and stated that they are thoroughly reviewing the circumstances.
