Kim Conaty Promoted to Chief Curator at the Whitney Museum: A Curator of Prints and Drawings’ Success Story
The Whitney Museum of American Art has named Kim Conaty as its new chief curator. Conaty, who currently serves as the curator of prints and drawings at the museum, will take on her new role starting on 8 April. She will be responsible for overseeing the permanent collection and acquisitions, as well as the curatorial, publications, and conservation departments. Conaty’s appointment was praised by the museum’s director, Scott Rothkopf, who highlighted her talents as an exhibition maker and her scholarly expertise across the Whitney’s program and collection. Conaty, who joined the Whitney in 2017, has curated several notable exhibitions, including a landmark Edward Hopper exhibition and the first survey of Ruth Asawa’s drawings. Her latest exhibition, “Survival Piece #5: Portable Orchard,” opens on 29 June. Conaty has also played a key role in the Whitney collection’s strategic plan, with a focus on expanding into underrepresented areas. In her new role, Conaty plans to emphasize adding works by Latinx and Indigenous artists. The Whitney Museum, which relocated to a larger and more prominent building in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District in 2015, welcomed 768,000 visitors last year, making it one of the most-visited art museums in the world.
