The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York has appointed Lucian Simmons as the head of its internal provenance research team. Simmons, previously with Sotheby’s, will lead efforts to address past provenance scandals and restitution of objects to countries like Cambodia, China, Egypt, India, Italy, Nepal, Nigeria, and Yemen. The museum has also returned works taken from Jewish owners during WWII. With Simmons joining, the team now has 11 members, including experts from institutions like the Smithsonian and the School for Advanced Research. The museum’s director, Max Hollein, expressed gratitude for the team’s efforts and stated that the new hires will enhance provenance research across departments. Simmons aims to coordinate research efforts and support the museum’s mission to further its collection of over 1.5 million objects.
