Former Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego downtown location transforms into Navy Seal Museum

The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) in downtown San Diego has handed over its lease to the Navy Seal Museum. The Navy Seal Museum will use the space for a historic survey of the military branch and for recruitment. MCASD’s main building in La Jolla is now the museum’s only location. The Navy Seal Museum is scheduled to open in late December.
MCASD Downtown officially opened in 1993 at One America Plaza, designed by architect Helmut Jahn. The larger building at 1100 Kettner Boulevard opened in 2007. MCASD’s La Jolla location underwent a $105m renovation by architect Annabelle Selldorf and reopened in 2022 with quadrupled exhibition space.
The fate of MCASD Downtown’s buildings remains unknown. The building at 1001 Kettner Boulevard previously housed educational departments and off-site installations. Plans for the building at 1100 Kettner Boulevard, where programming with theatre and performance groups took place, have not been identified yet. The final exhibition at MCASD Downtown closed in October 2022. The future purpose of the building is still to be determined.
