The Great Mosque of Algiers, the largest mosque in Africa, has recently opened in the Algerian capital after seven years of construction. Designed by German architects and constructed by a Chinese firm, the mosque can accommodate 35,000 worshippers and 120,000 visitors. The project, initially criticized as a vanity project due to its high cost and former president’s involvement, was inaugurated four years later under a new president. Boasting the tallest minaret in the world at 869 ft, the mosque is now the second tallest building in Africa and is surrounded by a complex featuring shops, restaurants, libraries, museums, and apartments.
